Basic bolognaise

This simple bolognaise recipe is a great foundation recipe for many other dishes such as pasta bake, shepherd’s pie and chilli con carne.

This recipe is ideal to freeze, so always make an extra batch to save for another meal.

Serves 4


1 tablespoon olive oil
2 cloves garlic
1 onion, diced
500g lean beef mince
375g can of diced tomatoes
2 tablespoons tomato paste
1 large carrot, grated
1 zucchini, grated

Optional: Add your choice of mixed herbs prior to serving. Ideal herbs to try include basil, oregano and parsley.


Step 1: Heat oil in a frypan. Add onion and garlic and cook until onion has softened.
Step 2: Add the mince beef to the pan and stir through. Cook until browned.
Step 3: Add the tomatoes, tomato paste and grated zucchini and carrot. Mix through and simmer, stirring occasionally, for 20 minutes.

Tip: Save any left overs to use in toasted sandwiches for a simple left overs lunch the next day.
